Hi Parents and Students,
You will remember that at Christmas time the students decided that instead of doing a gift exchange, they would collect toys for poor children in Medellin, Colombia. A student in our class is closely associated with a charity (Seeds of Love and Hope) that provides families in this town with their material needs.
Mrs. Basso visited Medellin during spring break, and she brought your generous donations to a class from the local school (children the same age as those in Div. 7).
She was kind enough to take photos of the children receiving their gifts. You can see from their expressions that they were very appreciative. Mrs. Basso visited our class last week and shared her experiences and answered the students' questions.
Gracias! I think that this act of giving meant far more to the students of Division 7 than receiving a toy themselves would have, and it helped open their eyes to the disparity of wealth between Canadians and Colombians.

Healthy Eating Project
Health and Career Education: April
Name: _________________________________
This month in HACE we are working on the following learning outcome: “[students will] describe choices they can make for healthy eating, based on Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating”.
You will be investigating the Food Guide using online resources. You will then demonstrate your understanding of the Food Guide through an art project.
Activity: Show a day’s healthy eating.
Your job is to artistically represent three potential meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) as well as healthy snacks that would meet the Canada’s Food Guide requirements for a person your age.
In order to create this project, you will first need to use the guide here http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/basics-base/quantit-eng.php
to find out how many servings a person your age needs.
List them here:
Category Number of servings I need daily
Next, you need to find out what a serving looks like. Check out this link:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/basics-base/serving-portion-eng.php as well as the links on the bottom of the page that comes up.
Write examples here:
Category Example of one serving
Next, make sure you include some wise choices! See this link: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/basics-base/count-maximum-eng.php
Write one tip per food category:
1. _________________________________________________________________________
2. _________________________________________________________________________
3. _________________________________________________________________________
4. _________________________________________________________________________
Finally, read this page: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/choose-choix/advice-conseil/child-enfant-eng.php
Answer the following questions (short answer is ok):
1. Should children eat a low-fat diet?
2. What is the best drink for children (and all people) to have with meals?
3. Should children eat the same amount of food at each meal?
When you have finished doing the above reading and responding, hand in your answer sheet and begin work on your art project! See the criteria below for more information.
The Daily Plate: an artistic depiction of health eating for children
You are to depict a day’s worth of healthy eating in a creative and educational way.
Criteria:
1. You should portray at least one morning meal (a healthy breakfast), one midday meal (a healthy lunch) and one evening meal (a healthy dinner), as well as any healthy snacks that might be eaten between meals.
2. You should also include any beverages you would like to have during each meal or snack.
3. All foods depicted should be foods you would actually like to eat. The foods should be depicted in a way that looks appetizing as well as healthy.
4. You may use as much creativity as you would like for your depiction, but there should be a title: “{Your name}’s Daily Plate”. Somewhere on the project you also need to label the foods you are depicting, as well as what serving size of which food guide category is represented.
Examples of art projects:
-a poster showing a day’s worth of meals, fully coloured using pencil crayon
-a 3-D model of a day’s worth of meals inside of a shoe box using plasticine
-a mobile with hanging drawings or models of each meal or snack
-an acrylic painting of a restaurant table, filled with the day’s meals
-a collage using magazine pictures or can labels that represents the day’s meals

First Nations pictographs
Div. 7 students,
As promised, here are some of the photos I was able to take about 7 or 8 years ago near my hometown of Williams Lake. They are of pictographs in the Chilcotin at Farwell Canyon, and would be thousands of years old.
Today, First Nations people in that area are part of the Toosey First Nation, and belong to the larger Tsilhquot'in First Nation.

Photos
I need to post some photos taken of Div. 7 students this fall...
First, congratulations to Alouette's jack-o-lantern contest winner, Hannah! She was able to integrate some school spirit into her design...

Next are some photos taken on Hallowe'en! Enjoy...
And here's a group shot with costumes on:
Then we had a visit from a local children's book author, Rachelle Delaney:
I didn't get any pictures of our pj day on the last day of school, but I did grab a photo of the cards the students made (some left their cards behind that day).
I hope you enjoyed this peek into a few of the activities we did and that you are all having a nice break!

Dear Parents,
Division 7
is having a Christmas party on Friday, December 20th. Instead of doing a Secret Santa exchange, the
students decided they wanted to bring in gifts for less fortunate
children. They selected the charity,
Seeds of Love and Hope (for more information, see http://www.solahis.com/) , and one of
the parents from our class, Catherine Basso, is taking a trip to Medellin,
Colombia in March. She will personally
be able to bring our gifts to needy children who will be so grateful for
whatever we can provide.
This is a
voluntary donation; December is a tough month financially for many families,
and we don’t want to add unnecessary burden.
If you are able to participate, please purchase a new toy that is: good
quality (some dollar store toys are, but others are not, so be aware that we
want this child to have something that will not break immediately),
non-violent, and relatively small (as it has to fit into Catherine’s
suitcase!) The Bassos recommend things
like stuffed animals or Hot Wheels cars.
We had some
discussion about wrapping and exchanging the gifts first as a game, but there
was some discomfort with this, so I have made the decision that we will simply
collect the toys unwrapped.
You are
also invited to send your child with a mug on Friday, as Mr. Pitcher has kindly
offered to donate some hot cocoa for us!
If you are able to send along some sharing snacks for our party
(cookies, fruit, vegetables, etc.), the children will enjoy that too.
We will be
viewing the movie, “Elf”, which is rated G in Canada. Children are wearing pjs to school on Friday,
and are also invited to bring a blanket, stuffy or pillow if they’d like. We’ll be having some partner reading time and
some read aloud too for a nice, calm final day of school before the break.
If you have
any questions, please email me at Nancy_Rupert@sd42.ca. Have a very happy holiday break!
